Good Question, you can make a reservoir out of many things. I had this around in the garage and it looked good. If you visit the barrel ponics website you can download the manual and travis go's over all of those kinds a questions. If you have any further questions please feel free to e-mail me.

All I did was find some algae from a small pond or large pudle. With that I was able to see if it grew or died. It grew, so with that I started to add gravel and fish and plants. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. Take care and have a wonderful day.

This system uses pea gravel because it a cheap medium to use. I would strat my seed first in a green house or somewhere else and them transplant them into your aquaponics system.

The river pebbles do not provide the plants with nutrients, the nutrients are provided by the fish waste converted into plant available form in the water.

i have put together an aquaponics system my self and I have attempted a bell syphon. I say attempted because if the water could get high enough it would work do you think i need a bigger pump or could i close the gap between the stand pipe and the syphon itself I don't know. I am at a loss. I need help! I may post a vid on it so you could see it.
